Your Guide to Home Insulation

Need home insulation but not quite sure what type of insulation would be best for your property? We can help! Our team often chats with Raleigh homeowners about insulation needs and what the difference is between insulation materials and types of insulation.

There are 4 main types of residential home insulation:

  • Fiberglass Insulation
  • Cellulose Insulation
  • Mineral Wool Insulation
  • Spray Foam Insulation

Fiberglass Insulation

Made of tiny glass fibers, this material is affordable and readily available. Fiberglass insulation comes in batts or rolls and is easy to install. It provides excellent thermal performance and is effective in reducing heat transfer. However, be cautious while handling fiberglass insulation, as the fibers can irritate the skin and lungs.

Cellulose Insulation

Created from recycled paper and treated with fire retardants, cellulose insulation is a sustainable choice. It’s effective in reducing heat flow and offers good soundproofing qualities. Cellulose can be blown or sprayed into walls, attics, and other hard-to-reach areas. However, make sure it’s installed by professionals to ensure proper coverage and safety.

Mineral Wool Insulation

Mineral wool is constructed from rock or slag fibers and is inherently fire-resistant. This insulation provides excellent thermal and sound insulation properties. It is available in batts or loose-fill form and is suitable for both new construction and retrofitting projects. Mineral wool can also withstand high temperatures, making it ideal for areas where fire protection is crucial, such as around chimneys and furnaces.

Spray Foam Insulation

Spray foam insulation expands and fills every nook and cranny, creating an airtight barrier. This seamless insulation layer seals gaps, cracks, and crevices that other materials may miss, ensuring minimal heat transfer and maximum energy efficiency. It also boasts an impressive R-value, which measures an insulation material’s resistance to heat flow and helps maintain a consistent temperature indoors.
