Should You Replace Old Insulation?

Insulation is fundamental to a home’s wellbeing. At a minimum, it regulates the indoor temperature, helps soundproof your home, and acts as a barrier against mold/mildew. Insulation does the jobs we never think about on a daily basis, yet we become extremely aware when it stops functioning properly.

When was the last time your insulation was replaced? Is replacing insulating one of those annual chores you should have on your to-do list? Don’t stress! We’ll break down all the signs it’s time to replace your insulation.

If your home is experiencing any of the following signs, it may be time to schedule a consult:

Fluctuating Temperatures

The temperature inside your home should feel comfortable–not too hot in the summer and not too cold in the winter. If you’re experiencing a frigid bathroom while the living room is burning up, this may be an indication that your insulation needs some maintenance.

Air Drafts

When all windows and doors are closed in your home, if you’re experiencing air drafts, it’s time to take a look at your interior insulation. Aside from feeling the draftiness, take a look at your energy bill. If it consistently seems higher than normal, that is a good sign your home has air drafts.

Moisture Issues

Because insulation acts as an extra barrier against the climate, any interior leaks, water damage, and mold are all key indicators that there is an issue with insulation.

Pest/Rodent Infestations

Animals can do quite a number on your insulation. Squirrels, rats, mice, and other furry critters often seek comfort inside by using the material to create a new home for themselves. Not only does this break a barrier for the security of your home, but it also weakens the air quality as feces can linger between walls.

Home Shifting

Over the years, your home will shift and settle into place. This could be visible from the interior or exterior of the home by foundation cracks. Not all insulation is built to flex and shift as your home moves, which could break the air seal on your home and open opportunities for further damage.
